Six Months

This is an exciting time. Your baby is able to stay awake for longer periods of time, and he is starting to know the world around him.

Playing Together

Even small babies like to play with their parents. You can probably already tell what makes your baby happiest.

  • Let baby feel different objects by rubbing them against his hands.
  • Let baby have “tummy time” each day. Stay with baby during this time. Soon your baby will be crawling.
  • Help baby build towers out of blocks.
  • Carry and hold your baby as you move around the house. Talk about what you are doing.
  • Talking and reading every day helps your baby learn language.
  • Babies love routines. Try to do the same things at the same time every day.

Take Care of Those Teeth

Your baby might get her first tooth soon!

  • Wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth each day.
  • Once your baby starts teething, she may drool, become fussy, or put things in her mouth.
  • Try a cold teething ring to help her feel better.
  • Do not put baby to bed with a bottle. He could choke or get cavities.
  • If your baby uses a pacifier, be sure to clean it often with warm, soapy water.

Keeping Safe

Now that your baby is moving more, you have to keep a closer eye on her.

  • Watch your baby closely around bath tubs, swimming pools, play pools, or buckets. Babies can drown in a few inches of water.
  • Don’t leave your baby alone on high places such as beds, high chairs, or changing tables.
  • Help your baby learn why some things are not safe. If she goes to the stove, say “hot” and move her away.
  • Put baby gates at the top of stairs and keep doors closed.
  • At this age, babies put everything in their mouths. Make sure cleaners, bug spray, and medicines are locked away. Make sure small things are out of reach.
  • If you think your baby has swallowed something dangerous, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
